We travelled to Greece to attend our friends’ wedding and decided to make a trip out of it and spend a few days relaxing in Milos.

Milos is quite a big island. There are a lot of tourists but it doesn’t feel crowded because there are so many little towns and beaches to explore.

HOW TO GET TO MILOS

You have two options to get to Milos from Athens. You can fly from the International Athen’s Airport to the small airport of Milos, or you can take a ferry.

A few things to consider when flying to Milos :

  • the landing strip is small in Milos and if it’s too windy they might cancel flights (like it happened when we were in Milos)
  • it’s a short flight (40-45 mins) : you will save yourself a lot of time if you only have a few days in Greece
  • The flights in the summer cost between 200-300$ CAD

A few things to consider when taking a ferry to Milos:

  • there are many ferry companies that go to Milos – check the routes, some might make a few pit stops on other islands on the way there, some are faster, some are slower. It can take between 3 hours to 8 hours to get to Milos!
  • Ferries don’t always respect their schedules. Don’t book a ferry too close to the time your flight is scheduled at.
  • Pack some food – the selection on board is limited and isn’t always great (Plus it’ll be cheaper to buy some snacks before you board)
  • You get to see a few islands on your way to your destination.

HOW TO GET AROUND MILOS

The island is quite big. It would be a shame to only stay in Adamantas, where the ferry terminal is, during your whole stay.

You can use the bus system – but you’re bound to a certain schedule that’s not always respected. Also, the buses don’t take you all the way down to all the beaches, so expect some walking. If you’re taking the bus, you might need to combine this with a few taxis here and there.

If you ask us, the best option is to have your own car. We rented one for an excellent price at RAC car rental. When we arrived, our car had not been returned on time by the previous driver. They gave us a very old convertible that was in a bad condition, but with the plan to exchange it for a newer model the next morning. And they did. We were very satisfied with their service. They even picked us up at the ferry terminal when we arrived and dropped us off at the port on our way back.

WHERE TO STAY

POLLONIA

We stayed in Pollonia, as it was recommended to us by many people and on multiple blogs.

Pollonia is a cute little town, that basically has one main street, which is pretty small. It has a resort type of vibe, quieter than Adamantas, with a chic vibe and mixed crowd of honeymooners and families. All the restaurants are good and you can rest assured you will have a good meal. There are plenty of hotel options, some that are fancy.

The ferry departure to Komolos is also in Pollonia and a few boat tours are offered from the port of Pollonia.

It is about 10 minutes from Adamantas.

We stayed at Glaronisia hotel and enjoyed our cute terrasse, the pool, the easy parking and the great views. It is a short walk to the center of Pollonia.

Stay here if : you are looking for a laid-back but more upscale vibe, with some good restaurants and quiet strolls along the port at sunset.

ADAMANTAS

Adamantas is where all the ferries arrive in Milos. It’s busy, it’s lively, there are a lot of restaurant options, shops and most of the bars of Milos are located here. A lot of the boat tours leave from here and it’s good central location on the island to get around.

We really enjoyed coming here at night for a pre-dinner walk, checking out the boutiques and had some delicious food. We also went for drinks in the bar area, which offer a nice view on the port.

Stay here if: you want to stay in a lively area, with lots of restaurants and bars. This is where the action is.

PLAKA

Plaka is your typical Cycladic village with white washed walls and blue rooftops. The views are breathtaking and this is definitely the place to come for sunset.

There are a few hotels here but keep in mind that if you are driving, you will have to leave your car in the parking lot outside of the narrow cobblestone streets of the old town.

Stay here if: you are looking for crazy views and stunning sunsets, with a good crowd and some delicious restaurants.

There are many other areas with accommodation options, near the beaches or the fishing villages too, outside of the bigger towns.

WHAT TO DO (and where to eat!)

There are a few museums and sites to visit (this is, after all, where the Venus of Milos statue was found), but to be honest, when on a greek island, all we want to do is beach hop and find the best greek salad !

1- FIROPOTAMOS BEACH

With its beautiful white and blue church overlooking the beach, it’s a nice little beach to check out. Make sure you climb up behind the church for a view!

2- MANDRAKIA

Stop by Mandrakia for a view of the coloured fisherman boats, but mostly for the delicious food at Medusa Restaurant. Plan for some possible wait time, but it’s worth it.

3- SARAKINIKO BEACH

You can’t come to Milos without checking out Sarakiniko. If you google Milos, this is the beach you will see in all the pictures. It’s a bit surreal, feels like you’ve landed on the moon and definitely a sight to see. Its unique white rocks were shaped by the wind and waves. Make sure you explore the caves too!

4- UTOPIA BAR IN PLAKA

This is a perfect spot for sunset! Stroll around the cute streets of Plaka and then go grab a seat before 7 pm. The drinks are yummy and the views are breathtaking.

*for a sunset view without having to spend on drinks, catch all the same views from the church*

After sunset, you can grab dinner at Arhontoula, right behind Utopia bar, which serves up some great stuff!

5- FIRIPLAKA BEACH

One of our favorite, because it was wide with calm waters and the multicoloured rocks are spectacular!

That’s also where we left from for our sea kayak tour which took us into little caves and to some nice beaches like Tsigrado (which is only accessible by boat, kayak or by going down a ladder)

6- KLIMA

Klima is famous for its colourful doors, but what you shouldn’t miss is the mouth-watering food at Astakas! (we were too hungry, we don’t have picture of the food !)

You can visit the little chapel on your way out!

7- PROVATAS BEACH

if you’re into an organized beach, with a bar and some sunbeds and umbrellas, this is a good spot! And the golden sand beach is beautiful!

8- PAPAFRAGAS BEACH

The water has carved itself between the rocks and have created these “water fingers” which are beautiful to see from up top.

There’s a small beach where you can access the water easily, but part of it is sadly covered with microplastic.

9- AGIA KIRIAKI BEACH

This was our favorite! The water was crystal clear and it was so calm we felt like we were in a pool. Beware, there are no umbrellas and barely any trees to hide in the shade… and it gets really hot really quickly! Bring plenty of water, sunscreen and a hat! (and if you have an umbrella, you’re in for the win)

10 – PALLAIOCHORI BEACH

With tavernas, chairs and umbrellas, this is another perfect, organized beach to check out!

11- NIGHT OUT IN AMAMANTAS

You will have many options for food and drinks, but make sure you check out Flisvos if you’re in the mood for gyros!

After dinner, grab a gelato, walk along the port and head up to the bar area for a drink!

12- ROMANTIC DINNER IN POLLONIA

We had dinner at Armenaki, a wine bar and a more upscale restaurant with food and wine pairing options.

We also checked out Gialos, which serves up some great seafood.

Fresh (huge) fishes!

13- *We did go diving with the Scubaholics dive center in Adamantas. The staff is great and the equipment is brand new. Sadly the current was so strong we had to cancel our second dive, and we didn’t see much on our first one, but definitely enjoyed getting back into diving in Milos!

Overall, Milos is such a beautiful island with lots of beaches to explore ! This is the beauty of Greece… you can keep coming back, and you will have a totally different experience every time!
